If we dragged a net behind a Hercules aircraft, and dragged it across the face of the earth, hauling in trees, birds, marsupials, the odd human, cats & dogs, crops & dwellings, all so we could 'catch' beef the horror would be immediate and the reaction instant.
We do the same to the ocean, it has a similar effect, all so we can catch a single target species. The rest is called 'bycatch' a weasel word that really means indiscriminantly killed wasted oceanic life. In a triump of marketing over truth the fishery is called sustainable and it continues under a cloak of invisibility. Because we see nothing that doesn't end up on ice or filleted, we can avoid the uncomfortable reality.
If we bound a dozen lambs and put them in a bin to mew and cover themselves in piss and shit, the horror would be immediate and the react instant. Creatures that live underwater have never evloved the capacity to vocalize, they can't scream, they can't respond in any way we would recognize, again, we can avoid the uncomfortable reality.
Sea no evil, hear no evil.
